If you haven’t heard, the jury of the Johnny Depp-Amber Hard Trial has reached a verdict today.
To the surprise of many, Depp was awarded 15 million in damages, the jury ruled in his favor and ruled that Hard made three separate defamatory statements in the 2018 article. The Washington Post.
They concluded that Hard had acted maliciously in making this statement.
In a move that seemed contradictory to many, the jury also awarded Hardk a 2 million reward for damages.
While this may sound like a split decision, Depp has clearly risen to the top financially, and he seems to have done quite well in the referendum court as well.
Hard was in court to hear today’s verdict, but while Depp was in London, he explained through his deputies that he had been forced to appear in the UK under duress.
But while he was not available for comment, Depp’s team issued the following statement shortly after the verdict was announced:
“Six years ago, my life, the lives of my children, the lives of those closest to me, as well as the lives of those who have supported and believed in me for many years, have changed forever.
“False, very serious and criminal allegations were made against me through the media, which created a boundless barrier to hateful content, although no charges were brought against me. It has already traveled around the world twice in nanoseconds and caused an earthquake. My life and mine Impact on career.
“And six years later, the jury gave me back my life. I’m really humble.
“From the very beginning, the purpose of bringing this case was to reveal the truth regardless of the outcome. Speaking the truth was something I owe to my children and to those who have remained steadfast in their support of me.
“I feel at peace knowing I’m finally done.”
Depp concludes by thanking fans who have been by his side in this year’s long legal battle, writing:
“I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and the overwhelming support and generosity from around the world.
“I am Hopefully my search for truth will help others, male or female, who have found themselves in my situation and those who support them will never give up. I further hope that the position will now return to innocence until both the court and the media are found guilty.
The best has not yet arrived and a new chapter has finally begun. Veritas Namkuam Parit. Truth is never lost. “
Not surprisingly, Hard took a very different view of the verdict.
Earlier today, the actress issued a statement in which she expressed regret over the jury’s decision and expressed fears about what it might mean for victims of abuse:
“It simply came to our notice then. I am heartbroken that the mountain of evidence was still not enough to stand up against my ex-husband’s incompatible power, influence and dominance, “Hard wrote.
“I’m even more disappointed with what this ruling means for other women. It’s a shock. It sets the clock at a time when a woman who has spoken and spoken can be publicly embarrassed and humiliated. That brings back the idea.” Every violence must be taken seriously.
“I believe Johnny’s attorneys have succeeded in getting the jury to ignore the core issue of freedom of speech and ignore the evidence that was so final that we won in the UK,” he continued.
“I’m sorry I lost this case. But I’m still sorry that I seem to have lost a right that I thought I had as an American – to speak freely and openly.”
When such judgments become the source of everyday tabloid drama, it is easy to forget that real human life and very serious allegations are involved.
Across the social media landscape, the decision has been hotly debated, with both sides predicting what kind of precedent the case could set for future conflicts involving domestic violence.
Experts predict that Hard’s team will appeal the verdict, and that the matter could be re-filed in the very near future.
For now, however, Depp and his team are celebrating a victory that is a shock to many legal experts.
Defamation is always difficult to prove, and in this case, there was an additional hurdle to clean up Depp, as the actor’s name was not mentioned in Hard’s article.
Some say the unlikely decision is an indication of how powerful Depp’s case was, while others see it as nothing more than proof that wealth and fame remain the ultimate Trump card in the American justice system.
In any case, it seems that today’s decision will be the subject of a hot-button debate for the foreseeable future.
